Should have really posted over xmas, but here are some photos from December-better late that never. I went to see the Xmas tree at Claridges, designed by Galliano. It looked like something out of the sea with crazy lighting! It was much more tasteful than the trafford centres choice of xmas trees! Oh Ghad!

And the first xmas dinner of the year at our flat! It was great but not patch on my mums...

Went and visited some german markets too, which was lovely...

A fortnight or so ago I went to the Barbican exhibition on Japanese fashion. It was my first visit to the Barbican, and I'm so glad I went just to see the building there. It is so weird, and sci-fi looking, I wasn't sure whether to love it or hate it! The exhibition was great, which I suppose it should be for the £10 ticket price! I loved seeing the garments of such influential designers up close- and it really did make you question your own take on fashion. The highlights were prints of garments laid out flat which made you really notice the construction, and also the video footage of an early Issey Miyake show full of colour and pleated garments which the models folded into sculptural shapes. Amazing.

Last weekend I went to Somerset House for the Rene Gruau Christian Dior exhibition. It was great! I love how Gruau brings humour to some of his illustrations. Also nipped in to the Matthew Williamson exhibition while I was there, the photos are great and sooo colourful- but would have loved it if they had at least one dress on display!

...had a couple of really good nights out in Camden-met some definite characters! Went to Holloway on saturday for a graffiti event called Meeting of Styles- was some really amazing stuff there! And today went to Somerset House for the Margiela exhbition. Loved seeing the clothes in person, and thought the exhibtion was really well done!

Spitalfields Sundays...

This Sunday me and my housemates went down to Spitalfields Market for the afternoon. It was dead fun, loads of different stalls and a great atmosphere. Saw some really nice stuff, although wasn't as cheap as I'd hoped! Apart from I did get some really nice stuffed olives (my favourite) However, down a sidestreet off Brick Lane ( which was absolutely buzzing with people) there were a few really good and alright priced vintage markets. Was a really good way to spend my first Sunday in London....

Watched Shutter Island for the second time last week and remembered how much I loved the 1950s style costumes throughout. My favourite was the yellow dress worn by Michelle Williams, I would love to find something similar for myself! Also love the print on the tie that Teddy wore throughout. I love the new Cadbury flake advert! I saw this on TV last week for the first time and was amazed! I have seen remarks on Youtube about the advert ripping off the Kate Moss hologram used at the McQueen show in 2006, and have to agree that there are alot of similarities! Nonetheless, the dress designed by Antony Price is a beautiful costume piece, shot beautifully in this advert!

I was in London last Friday and while I was there I decided to go and see the Grace Kelly exhibition at the V & A. It was very busy, but really enjoyable. Some of the outfits she wore were amazing, but all were incredibly feminine. I particularly liked the dresses by Marc Bohan at Christian Dior.

Last week I went on a trip to Paris with my university, to the trade show Premier Vision. Whilst in Paris I took a trip to the designer shops, and loved being able to see the clothes close up. Lanvin was definately one of my favourite stores, and I really loved these dresses from the collection. Here are a couple of the pieces I loved, and I will post some pictures from my trip soon. x

For my garment technology module we are recreating this John Rocha jacket in non woven materials, and using different methods to decorate it like laser cutting and embroidery. Nick Knight: Skinhead

For my 20th Century fashion essay I am looking at the two movements Skinheads and Mods. I have a real interest in skinhead menswear fashion, I really love it. I was already aware of the photographer Nick Knight from his famous fashion photography. When researching Skinheads I saw some of Nick Knight's early work, and love his photos of the Skinhead youth movement.

Garment Technology

Here are some photographs of samples made in my garment technology module, where we had to construct the patterns of each garment and then make them up in fabric. I find this module tests my patience the most, but I am pleased with the end results of the garments. I think my favourite of the samples was the strapless bodice, as it is something I would adapt to wear myself.

Here are some of the illustrations and flats for the Martin Margiela project. I created the flats on Kaledo, and later added fabric samples. I did the illustrations by hand, and then scanned them in to Photoshop to apply flat, block colour.

Digital Design

Here are some of the prints in different colourways, flat drawings and sketches I created for the Sloane Brittania trend for digital design. To create these I used the Lectra programmes, Kaledo Print and Kaledo Style. I found the programmes really helpful for creating flat drawings and will definately use it again in the future.

Chanel No. 5

I really love the new Chanel no. 5 advert. I went to see the Coco before Chanel film over the summer and really enjoyed it. I think Audrey Tatou is beautiful. I love the part in the advert where she walks into the station in the black outift, I think she looks so elegant, which is important to the brand Chanel whose main characteristics are elegance and class.

These are some new shoes I got this week from a vintage shop in Leeds and I LOVE them! They are so pretty and I'm not quite sure why but something about them reminds me of mice?! They were only ten pounds so think I got myself a bargain! These are another pair of shoes that belong to my friend Jake, and these are from Topman. I have a wierd love for mens shoes too, and even though they are quite simple I really like this pair and think they are really smart!

Digital Design

For my digital design module we have to create a range of garments using the software Lectra. I have almost finished designing a range of prints and garments using the software, which I quite enjoyed using and think I will use in the future when contructing flat drawings. I will post the designs for this project when they are complete. Until then, here is the inital research section which looks into trend, theme and customer. It also shows a palette I constructed using the programme Kaledo Print.

As a project for Design Development and Portfolio we were given a designer to research into, and then to design a range for their Autumn/Winter 2010/11 collection. My group were given Martin Margiela, a designer I had heard of the but was not familiar with. It was hard to research the brand as the designer himself is anonymous. Here are some sheets of research into brand, previous collections, future trends, and a mood board and customer profile. I am currently designing the range for the Autumn/Winter collection, which I will be posting in the next few weeks.

The Baltic

I have visited the Baltic a few times when I've been in Newcastle, and think the building itself is amazing. I went to see the Malcolm McLaren exhibition, which was very strange video piece of amateur porn looped around (very weird) and also the Damien Hirst exhibition which was just a replica of a pharmacy space (again, a bit too contemporary for me.) The part I really enjoyed was the exhibition by Martin Parr, a photographer who I already had an interest in. His photos were based around the theme of 'Luxury', and were taken from events attended by the wealthy from all over the world. They were really great photos with exaggerated colour typical of Parr, along with a strong sense of satire common in his work.

I really love Barbours waxed cotton jackets! I like the texture and the brown cord collars are a nice detail. I really want one but they are definitely out of my price range! I like the idea of buying a coat that you know will last you a lifetime!

For my birthday in October my friends surprised me with a weekend to Amsterdam! These are some photos I took during the trip. I love the photograph on the left of my two friends feet dangling on a fairground ride against a very blue sky. I also really like the old gold till which was in a shop, decorated very ornately. The pattern is the flooring in a really good vintage shop, the tiles were imported from Portugal and I think they are beautiful.

One of my favourite collections of all time was the Paul Smith PS range for last Autumn/Winter. The collection is inspired by the film 'Control' about the late Ian Curtis, lead singer of Joy Division. As a fan of Joy Division I was interested in the film, and when I saw the collection I thought it really reflected the mood of the film brilliantly. Although womenswear is my chosen pathway, this collection really inspired me into mens fashion, and was the start of an equal interest in menswear.

Florence and Fringe...

After watching the Glastonbury coverage this year i have been really into Florence + the Machine. The fringed jacket she wore for the performance was fantastic, and it looked beautiful when she moved.
